Sustaining Tourism in the most sustainable manner

Sustainable tourism operates by the concept of minimizing the costs and maximizing the benefits tourism provides. United Nations World Tourism organization in 1988 has defined Sustainable Tourism as “leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, and biological diversity and life support systems.” Following this, in 1992 the Earth Summit in Rio declared the triple principle of sustainable tourism, being- environmental, economic and social sustainability which is now adopted by the entire industry.

Ø  Four characteristics of Sustainable Tourism:

1.      Sustainable management

This aspect looks into the intersection between the business front and sustainability, particularly managing a firm’s actions in a way that accounts for the people, planet and profit in some sort of a balance so that all can prosper in the future.

2.      Socio-economic aspect

Within tourism socio-economic impacts result from the influence and costs tourists pose in the process of stimulating economic activity. In creating a major portion of business turnover for the industry, employment is generated along with revenue from taxes for the government. From the sustainable tourism perspective, socio-economic impacts should benefit the local communities the most in relation to development of poorer areas leading to more livelihood options.

3.      Cultural aspect

Sustainable tourism recognizes that culture plays a crucial role in the distinctiveness of a specific region and sets it apart in the global marketplace. It aims to introduce tourists to lesser known cultures through a unique approach so that they can support and strengthen cultural heritage. On similar lines, cultural production and creativity is constantly encouraged thereby creating favorable outcomes for the local inhabitants.

4.      Environmental aspect (including consumption of resources, reducing pollution, and conserving biodiversity and landscapes)

Since the relationship between tourism and the environment is complex, many activities in the tourism industry can have adverse effects on the naturally occurring systems. Sustainable tourism attempts to relieve some of the stress by valuing nature and its resources through education, awareness and adhering to necessary mandates. Sustainable tourism operates within certain set guidelines that not only increases its efficiency but reaps benefits in a number of ways.

A sustainable tourism venture would include niche activities already established such as; Adventure, wellness, medical, spiritual travel, film tourism, cruise, golf and so on. To achieve optimum results such a type of tourism would require the convergence of resources from multiple sectors in its endeavor to promote tourism at the state and central level.
